Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow is proud to announce that they have launched an online basic surgical training programme for all members of the college. BeST, or Basic electronic Surgical Training, is a structured surgical training programme, for post-graduate surgical trainees, delivered over the web.

The programme was developed by Intumed, a joint venture between the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, Harvard Medical International, and Intuition (a leading e-learning provider). The programme gives members the opportunity to use the world's first e-learning programme.

BeST uses the internet, not only as the delivery mechanism, but also to enhance the content in new and vibrant ways never seen before in postgraduate medical education. It is leveraging the unique attributes of the internet, such as interactivity, chat rooms, and online communities. It is entertaining, making use of audio, animation and video clips to enhance the student's experience. The effective use of this technology transforms the learning process. BeST requires the user to use higher order skills such as problem solving, collaboration, information analysis
and simulation.

Overview of BeST

The core content is packaged in an extensive 18-module syllabus, based on the syllabus for basic surgical examinations, specifically the Membership/Associate Fellowship examination. Each module is broken out into a set of tutorials, which build user knowledge and competence in an integrated manner.

The content is fully moderated by the RCSI and consists of over 5,000 web pages of information, training, tutorials and interaction which have been developed by over 100 surgical and medical contributors, leaders in their fields of medicine. BeST allows the student to study at their own pace and is available anytime, day or night, fitting easily into a busy schedule.

It is an interactive learning environment that includes realistic case studies, challenging simulations, tests and personalised feedback. Useful links, tutorial objectives, summaries and a comprehensive structure are designed to keep the user on course.

BeST uses the latest web e-learning technologies to deliver a user-focussed, flexible e-learning experience, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Trainees benefit from fully RCSI moderated core content, visual and interactive learning, realistic case studies, challenging simulations, tests and personalised feedback.

The trainee surgeons can apply their learning in life-like scenarios. Trainees can also join the learning community by interacting on-line with other trainees, with their online tutor and with the RCSI library over the web where they can access online journals and medline.
